Team China at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships
WIDPSC is one of the world's premier championships for individual student speaking, combining debate, prepared speaking, and impromptu performance in a single international competition.
Where versatility meets excellence
WIDPSC is a rare championship because it rewards versatility. Students are not judged in just one lane. They are asked to think on their feet, prepare polished speeches, perform literature with control and expression, and debate under pressure. It is an ideal competition for students who are both strong thinkers and compelling communicators.
The championship as a whole includes parliamentary debate, impromptu speaking, interpretive reading, persuasive speaking, and after-dinner speaking. Each competitor completes a mix of these events, typically including debate, impromptu speaking, interpretive reading, and one major prepared speaking event. That range is exactly what makes WIDPSC special: it develops not only argumentation, but voice, timing, delivery, humor, structure, and presence.

How Team China WIDPSC selection works
Team China WIDPSC is selected through a process that recognizes both excellence and range. Students apply with their personal and school information, a summary of relevant debate and public-speaking experience, and their top competitive achievements. Because WIDPSC rewards breadth, CSSDA looks for students who show promise across multiple speaking environments rather than in only one narrow format.
After the application deadline, a shortlist is created on the basis of experience, results, and overall fit for the championship. Shortlisted applicants then complete a live online assessment in the two impromptu events: parliamentary debate and impromptu speaking. In addition, shortlisted students prepare, record, and submit their prepared-event speeches. All parts of the process are judged by independent adjudicators who are unaffiliated with the participants.
Successful students are invited to join Team China WIDPSC for the season. From January onward, the team works with coaches through regular sessions, individual check-ins, and event-specific preparation leading into the championship in April. WSDC and WIDPSC are selected separately, and students are welcome to apply for both pathways if they are genuinely prepared for the different demands of each.

What Team China WIDPSC looks for
We are looking for students who combine competitive promise with coachability, discipline, and event range. A strong WIDPSC candidate may come from debate, speech, interpretation, or mixed forensics backgrounds. What matters most is whether the student can perform at a high standard across the event set and whether they are ready to improve quickly inside a coaching environment.
Team China WIDPSC is operated on a non-profit basis. Participation costs and shared team expenses are communicated transparently to families before students are asked to confirm their place.
